South Asian Arts worked with actor and first-time playwright Munish Sharma to present the premiere of the play, Mrs. Singh & Me at The Cultch as part of the Vancouver Fringe Festival from September 11-20th. After 6 successful shows at the Fringe, Mrs. Singh & Me was awarded “Pick of the Fringe”, which meant an encore presentation was added on on Sunday, September 27th at the Arts Club Revue Stage on Granville Island.
Following the amazing run in Vancouver, Mrs. Singh & Me also ran in Surrey from October 2-4th at the Newton Cultural Centre for a total of 5 shows.
Directed by Jessie Award-nominee Kathleen Duborg, produced by Gurpreet Sian and award-winning producer Rohit Chokhani, and starring Munish Sharma and award-winning actress Nimet Kanji (Bollywood Wedding, The Violet Hour, Continuum), Mrs. Singh & Me confronted cultural traditions and tackled generational differences, along with a generous helping of chai and cookies. Love is in the air in this dark comedy, but Mrs. Kuldeep Singh (Nimet Kanji) is having none of it. Her instincts could be right or she could be missing out on the best son-in-law she could ever ask for – Raj, whose methods are as extreme as his heart is sure.
“Munish Sharma and South Asian Arts Society have put together a show that’s both audience-pleasing funny and a serious account of intra-cultural, intergenerational tensions.”
“Nimet Kanji gives life to the role of Mrs. Singh, masterfully balancing comedy and emotional sincerity.” – Schema Magazine
“Mrs. Singh & Me is worth seeing for Kanji’s expressive, funny performance.”
– Vancouver Sun
